Disclaimer: I am nobody’s dermatologist. The below features a routine–through trial, error, and a sprinkle of blessings–that has worked for me.
The good sis Rihanna has laid the foundation for summer slayage with her $42 glitter poof and $59 body lava (which, instead of paying a bill or two, I’m will be buying or DIYing–whichever comes first). Because my skin is known to act a fool, it’s best I start training it now to avoid cystic breakouts and unnecessary hyper-pigmentation come summer. Your makeup is only as good as the skin underneath! All the highlighter in the world can’t replace the natural glow of healthy, hydrated skin!
I didn’t have any March nor April Faves because I needed dental work (womp, womp). Once I finished paying for my pearly whites, I opted to update my skin and makeup for Spring by investing in new makeup (check out my Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam Palette Review here), applicator tools, and updating both my skincare and makeup routine.
If I’m experiencing a drastic breakout, before I run to my nearest Sephora, I always ask myself:
- When was the last time I washed my hair?
- When was the last time I washed my pillowcases, sheets, and duvet?
- When was the last time I exfoliated?
- Is my period coming soon? Are my breakouts only on my chin?
- How much water have I consumed lately?
- Have I been eating a lot of fried foods lately?
- Have I fallen asleep with makeup on?
All of the above are triggers for my breakouts. I consciously avoided the above triggers and committed the below routine consistently for a month. Check out how my skin responded to my regime!
*Step One: I only do this step once a week. Deep exfoliation with the Origins Modern Friction mask. This mask does an amazing job at removing the top dead layer of skin and retexturizing my face. I’m always left with a smooth, soft foundation. Kim Kardashian’s skincare routine is all about exfoliation! When you exfoliate, it triggers your body to produce new skin, leaving your face soft and renewed. Exfoliating regularly avoids trapping sebum under layers and layers of dead skin! Sometimes I put this mask on my chest if I’m suffering from a hormonal breakout just to reset my skin. Additionally, on deep exfoliation days, I gently exfoliate my lips with a wash rag and top with cocoa butter Vaseline. One of these days, I’ll grow up and do the adult thing by buying/making a sugar scrub instead.
*Step One: I cleanse using Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser. It removes my makeup in its entirety and my face feels clean afterwards. If I don’t use this wash in conjunction with my Clarisonic Mia Fit, it tends to leave behind flaky skin. I’ve found that the texture and brightness of my skin has greatly improved by using my Clarisonic Mia Fit in conjunction with the Cetaphil because the device mildly exfoliates daily. I use the Radiance Brush Head.
Step Two: The next product, the Origins Zero Oil Pore Purifying Toner, is fairly new to my regime. I squeeze a bit onto an exfoliating cotton round (yes, this is a thing) and wipe away any remaining debris on my skin and hairline. I love the refreshing feel of mint!
Step Three: Then, I go in with my Origins Willowherb Serum. I already went on and on about why I love this product in my February Faves.
I finally picked up a product from The Ordinary!
Step Four: I am SO self conscious about my dark circles and facial lines. I’ve had inset eyes since I was a baby and now that I’m thirty, I feel like it ages me tremendously. As badly as I’d like to get injectibles to fill this area, (a) I don’t have the money, (b) I’m terrified of needles and (c) I’ve heard that when you fill the area, it can create darkness because your veins are stretched. I go without makeup quite a bit and that defeats the entire purpose. For $700, I want to look 25 with and without makeup!
I am absolutely loving my results with The Ordinary’s Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG. Like any skincare product, you have to use continuously in order to see results. My under-eye concealer looks so much better when I use this product. Under my eyes, it is lighter and brighter so my makeup doesn’t have to work so hard. Without makeup, I don’t look as tired because the darkness has faded.
Step Five: Because my skin is combination oily, I add a drop of May Coop Raw Sauce Essence to my moisturizer, the Origins Make A Difference +Rejuvenating Treatment. I tried to use the essence before my moisturizer as directed, but I found it works best when I add a drop or two to my moisturizer in one step. I live in a tropical climate so I need something that is moisturizing but not too heavy. This gel does the trick. The essence adds a bit more moisture leaving my skin nice and supple.
BONUS Step: I started using the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask weekly as well. I heard so many amazing reviews about this product. For only $10, I had to try it! I applied the mask to my face, arms, and chest for a deep, pore cleanse and to reduce my pores. You can also use this on your hair for a deep cleanse (it’s going to strip your hair of all oil and debris so please make sure you have a great hair moisturizing routine prior to hair usage).
Am I sponsored by Origins? No. Would I like to be? Hells yeah! I’ve spent so much money on skincare and dermatology visits and this product line is the only one that significantly got my skin under control. I love that their stores are generous with product samples–they believe in their products and give you ample product to see the benefits before committing to a full sized purchase. If you’re near an Origins store, stop in for a free mini makeover! Leave with some samples! Tell ’em Dom sent you! (Side note: These people don’t have a clue who I am–but they will).
Wanna really glow? Eating lots of green leafy vegetables, have a glass or two of green tea daily, and take lysine supplements.
After consistently adhering to this regime, my skin is brighter, smoother, and I get far less breakouts. I plan to experiment with a nighttime routine dedicated to hydration and fading my acne scars! Stay tuned…
Cheers to poppin skin instead of poppin pimples!
I don’t really post pictures that often, but I am free as a bird on Instagram stories. Are we friends?!
